The quarterback position, at its core, is a riddle, a sphinx, a Rubik's Cube to solve. Let's start there before getting to the Forgotten Man of the Dolphins. More than half of last Sunday's starting quarterbacks (15 of 28) were no longer with their original team. Nearly one-third (nine) were on at least their third team. Four weren't even drafted. You need more? The San Francisco 49ers drafted Alex Smith with the No. 1 pick in 2005. Their quarterback of the future is J.T. O'Sullivan, a sixth-round pick on his seventh team. Kurt Warner came from bagging groceries to win a Super Bowl title. Then he was cut loose. Then again. Now he's winning in Arizona. Stuff like this boggles the mind. How ..."

(On if he feels himself pressing at this point) ? "No. I would just say you're trying to maximize every play. When you're in a quarterback competition like this, you don't want to go out there and force a ball. You don't want to go out there and not take advantage of a play. So you're really trying to be perfect. Some people may say, 'Oh, that's pressing.' But I say that's the game. That's what the game is like. When you're trying to win a football game you have to be smart with the ball, you have to take advantage of a play when it's there because some teams, they may only give you one shot for a home run, but you have to be able to find it and take it. So I would say having it like this ..."

There should be no doubt the newest Dolphins regime wants John Beck to win the starting quarterback job in the coming weeks. Why? One reason. And maybe it can be viewed better by asking this: Do you see the Dolphins winning a title with Josh McCown at quarterback? In his seventh year, McCown is on his fourth team. He's being passed around like table salt. So the stars would have to align for him suddenly to turn into a championship quarterback. And can the Dolphins contend someday with Beck? We don't know. That passes for a positive as the Dolphins prepare to open the kind of training camp Saturday that they've never had. Any glint of hope will be labeled as a full nugget. There are two ..."

"Josh (McCown) and I are splitting reps day-to-day. The first day I got to take it, the next day Josh did, so we'll go back and forth. First-team wideouts are kind of intermixed between the two so it's good because we're always getting to throw to those guys we're going to throw to. We're always getting work with those guys that are going to be playing.""

Last year wants to hover over John Beck like an angry cloud, ready to rain on the rest of his career anytime he fumbles or throws an interception or trips over a lineman's foot, because that is mostly what happened during a forgettable, regrettable 2007. Last year is a recurring nightmare. And the worry with Beck, as with any quarterback that goes through tough times as a rookie, is that he won't be able to wake up. The concern is that he is permanently stained and won't be able to move on from that difficult first year."

Less than a week after enduring a forgettable rookie season, Dolphins quarterback John Beck instead chose to remember.
After a brief trip to the Magic Kingdom with his wife Barbara and son Ty, Beck canceled his customary fishing trip so he could get back to work on improving — and proving to himself and the "Big Tuna" that he belonged in the organization's rebuilding process."
