Ian Snell News

Slight changes pay off big for Snell
"The maligned Pirates right-hander is salvaging what looked to be a lost 2008 season with an August victory drive. Snell, coming off a 4-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday, has more wins in the past five starts (two) than he had between mid-April and late July. "I felt that's where I should be," he said. "Now, I'm looking forward to my next start." Lately, Snell hardly looks like the same pitcher who failed to survive the sixth inning in 12 consecutive starts this year. He looks like the one who finished in the top-10 in the NL last year in strikeouts and innings pitched, earned a three-year, $8.6 million extension and was the Opening Day starter. "Some people," he said, "were ..."
First-inning woes continue for Snell
"Ian Snell recovered from a rough -- and almost game-over -- first inning and pitched well enough to get a win last night. Trouble was, Philadelphia's Brett Myers was better against the Pirates' sputtering offense and the Phillies gained a 4-2 victory in front of a sellout crowd of 45,060 at Citizens Bank Park. In the first inning, Snell threw a staggering 37 pitches and threw first-pitch strikes to six of eight batters. Yet he escaped having allowed just two runs. "It seems like the first inning is the one that gives him the most trouble," Pirates manager John Russell said. "Once he gets out of it, he's fine. "His last few starts, we've seen a lot of very good signs of him turning the ..."
Pirates Insider: Snell gets attitude adjustment
"Ian Snell's attitude has been reversed in a little more than two weeks. The Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander was frustrated and a little scared when he felt a twinge in his elbow during his last start, a loss to Toronto on June 22. However, after 15 days on the disabled list, Snell returns to action tonight after overcoming inflammation in the elbow and will start against the Houston Astros at PNC Park. Snell is now upbeat and raring to go."
Test results relieve for Bucs' Snell
"Ian Snell was upbeat -- and very relieved -- Tuesday after finding out the pain in his right arm is only "golfer's elbow" and not structural damage. "I'm sore, too," Snell said. "The needle they stuck in me didn't tickle. It was long." The needle was used to inject dye in Snell's elbow to conduct a magnetic resonance imaging arthography. The test, conducted by Dr. Patrick DeMeo at Allegheny General Hospital, revealed a sprain."
Snell, Dumatrait get upbeat diagnoses
"The Pirates' news on the pitching front was as bright as could have been expected yesterday, with starters Ian Snell and Phil Dumatrait each learning his arm injury is not serious. But general manager Neal Huntington still might go outside the organization for pitching help. First, to the injuries ... Snell, who felt pain in his right elbow Sunday, has medial epicondylitis, commonly called golfer's elbow. It is the simple overuse of a muscle, and rest and icing are all that is prescribed. The arthrogram, performed at Allegheny General Hospital by the team physician, Dr. Patrick DeMeo, showed no damage to the ulnar collateral ligament, near where the pain was ..."
Snell likely to avoid DL
"Pirates right-hander Ian Snell's sore right elbow likely will not land him on the disabled list. But it will keep him off the golf course. Results of a magnetic resonance imaging arthography performed Monday morning showed no structural damage in Snell's elbow. Snell was diagnosed with medial epicondylitis, also known as "golfer's elbow." Snell's status is listed as day-to-day, and all indications are he will not be placed on the disabled list. However, the Pirates may decide to skip Snell's next scheduled start Friday against Tampa Bay."
Snell shaken, stirred after Pirates' loss to Jays
"Ian Snell was defiant as he spoke to reporters following another rough outing Sunday. "People can say I (stink). People can boo me," the Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander said. "I don't care. I'll always go out there and give everything I have. I'm always going to compete as hard as I can. Nobody is ever going to take away my manhood, ever. Not until I'm dead." On a day when Snell got a no-decision in the Pirates' 8-5 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays at PNC Park that cost them a chance to sweep the three-game series, his emotions changed once reporters left his locker. There were tears forming in Snell's eyes as he walked toward the trainer's room."
Elbow ailment adds to Snell's woes
"Pirates right-hander Ian Snell talked tough Sunday after his latest wipeout, an 8-5 loss against the Toronto Blue Jays. "I was (lousy)," Snell said. "I'm trying my hardest. I'm trying everything possible. My head's there, everything's there. I don't know what's going on, from last year to this year. It has nothing to do with my contract, nothing. It's just ... I don't know." But behind the bravado was another emotion. Fear. Snell, who has just one victory in his past 13 starts, was forced out of the game by elbow pain. He will undergo a magnetic resonance angiography this morning."
Bucs' Snell snaps victory drought
"Ian Snell didn't sleep well after the Pirates' tough ninth-inning loss to the last-place Nationals on Tuesday night. "I kept telling myself, 'We need a win. We need a win,' '' Snell said. "All night. I haven't gotten much sleep in the past couple of days." Snell rested well last night. The right-hander limited the Washington Nationals to one earned run in six-plus innings and won for the first time since early April with a 3-1 victory over the Nationals."
Bucs' Snell, Gorzelanny look for boost
"The Washington Nationals' struggling offense could be just the tonic for Pirates starters Ian Snell and Tom Gorzelanny. Snell (2-6, 5.65 ERA) is 0-6 since April 12, and Gorzelanny (4-5, 6.83) owns one win in the past month. The Nationals are hitting .232 as a team - by far the lowest in the majors - and scored one run or fewer in six of their past nine games, while going 1-8."
Snell roughed up in loss, but encouraged by effort
"The team had received strong efforts from its starting pitching in three consecutive games and yesterday's starter Ian Snell said he was confident and ready to return to his old form. The form that earned him a contract extension and the designation as the team's ace coming into the season. But Snell lasted only four innings, gave up six runs (all earned) and eight hits as the Pirates fell to the Cardinals, 7-4, before a sellout crowd of 43,462 at Busch Stadium. Snell's toughest inning was the bottom of the second when he gave up five runs on five hits and a walk. Despite those numbers, however, Pirates manager John Russell seemed somewhat pleased with the way Snell (2-5) threw the ..."
Pirates Notebook: Snell won't give in to Cardinals' Pujols
"Ian Snell will be the starting pitcher this afternoon when the Pirates play the third game of a four-game series at Busch Stadium against the Cardinals. That means a matchup against Albert Pujols, who has been a Pirates killer and, more important, a player who has been especially tough on Snell. "It seems like everybody else in the league can get him out but us," Snell said, then laughed. "And he owns me. But it is fun because you know if you can get him out you can get anybody in the league out."
