Broncos report: Williams' shift yields results
"Broncos coach Mike Shanahan has looked at the Broncos defense each of the past two weeks and decided he likes the effort overall. But he also concedes, "we've got plenty of work to do." Yet, he likes what moving linebacker D.J. Williams from the middle to one of the outside positions has done as the team tries to repair what has gone wrong so far. Williams, who started at middle linebacker in 2007 in former defensive coordinator Jim Bates' scheme, was moved back to the weak-side position - away from the offense's tight end - during the offseason. Williams started at the weak-side spot in his first two seasons with the Broncos, moved to the strong side - directly across from the tight end - ..."
D.J.'s speed produced end of last drive sooner than Saints wanted
"Broncos reporter Mike Klis breaks down a key play from Denver's 34-32 victory over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday at Invesco Field at Mile High: The play: The Broncos led 34-32, but the Saints had third-and-1 at the Denver 24 with 2:19 left. The Saints handed off to their short-yardage back, Pierre Thomas, who was tackled in the backfield by Broncos linebacker D.J. Williams for a 1-yard loss. On fourth-and-2, the Saints had Martin Gramatica try a 43-yard field goal. He missed, wide right, and the Broncos won. Point/counterpoint: On the pivotal stop, the Broncos lined up eight players on the line of scrimmage, with Williams on their far right. Another Broncos linebacker, Jamie Winborn, ..."
Broncos ink D.J. Williams to extension
"Broncos assistant general manager Brian Xanders briskly walked into the Broncos locker room Friday afternoon, earnestly searching for linebacker D.J. Williams. After a spin past Williams' empty locker and a lap through the training room, Xanders located Williams down the hall. But the two have had plenty to talk about as the Broncos have agreed to terms with their starting weak-side linebacker on a five-year extension. The deal, which is expected to be formally signed before the team leaves for Oakland Sunday, includes roughly $13 million guaranteed and could be worth as much as $31 million to $32 million. The Broncos open the season Monday night against the Raiders in McAfee Coliseum. ..."
Williams, Broncos agree to five-year deal
"Realizing, at long lost, they have a special weakside linebacker, the Broncos have reached an agreement in principle to a five-year contract extension with D.J. Williams, according to two team sources. Williams, 26, would have been eligible for unrestricted free agency after this season. A "Will" linebacker by trade, Williams was the Broncos' first-round draft pick out of Miami in 2004 and led the team with 114 tackles that year while finishing third in the NFL defensive rookie of the year balloting. But after the Broncos re-signed Ian Gold prior to the 2005 season, Williams was shifted to the strongside linebacker, a position that cut his playing time in half for two seasons. He was given ..."
