Red Wings Trade Rumors

Steve Yzerman hints at career beyond Red Wings
"Red Wings vice president Steve Yzerman spent the weekend watching practices and scrimmages at Centre Ice Arena, where the Wings are holding training camp. That has become business as usual for him over the past three years, since he retired from playing and moved into the front office. Having accomplished pretty much everything as a player, including winning three Stanley Cups, Yzerman, 43, is now working on being successful behind the scenes - and doing so could lead him away from the team he has been with for a quarter of a century. "I guess I would just say that I've got certain things that I want to accomplish in hockey, and that opportunity may or may not be here in Detroit," Yzerman ..."
Steve Yzerman touted as Team Canada's GM
"Red Wings general manager Ken Holland says that team vice president Steve Yzerman is the ideal candidate to be the executive director of the 2010 Canadian Olympic hockey team and that coach Mike Babcock will be one of the leading candidates to coach the squad. TSN.ca reported that Yzerman is expected to replace Wayne Gretzky as the head of Team Canada. Gretzky, who was executive director when the team won gold in Salt Lake City in 2002 and failed to medal in Torino, Italy, in 2006, said Monday he would not return as executive director but might stay on in a minor role. Holland, in Traverse City for the Wings prospects camp, said by phone Tuesday that he had not spoken to anyone from Hockey ..."
Darren McCarty expects to sign with Wings any minute now
"Quickon the Darren McCarty situation: He told me post-practice today he expects to sign the two-way, $500,000 deal the Wings have offered him today or tomorrow morning. McCarty said he plans to be on the bus Thursday when the Wings head to Traverse City for the start of training camp. McCarty has postponed signing due to a question about bonuses (basically, a team has to absorb bonuses into this season's cap rather than defer until next season like previously possible, because the CBA may be opened next summer and thus there's no guarantee of a 2009-10 season). McCarty also would have preferred to sign a one-way deal, but the Wings aren't going to be swayed on this point. They already ..."
Zetterberg, seeking long-term deal, to wed girlfriend
"Henrik Zetterberg, the reigning Conn Smythe Trophy winner as playoff MVP, can become an unrestricted free agent next summer, but he seems genuinely committed to the Red Wings. "It's many months before the open market starts; hopefully, we can get something done before," Zetterberg said Wednesday after returning from Sweden and participating in an informal practice with teammates at Joe Louis Arena. "I love it here. This has become a home for me. I would like to be here for a long, long time." Advertisement Zetterberg said his agent, Marc Levine, and Wings general manager Ken Holland have started discussions concerning a potential new deal. Holland said these types of negotiations often ..."
Chelios to sign for 24th NHL season
"Chris Chelios was back on the ice Tuesday morning before heading off to meet with Red Wings general manager Ken Holland to sign his contract for this season. Chelios, 46, will be entering his 24th year in the NHL, ninth with the Wings. "I guess I can say I'm a survivor because I'm still here at this age," Chelios said following an informal skate with teammates at Joe Louis Arena. "If I get a chance, I'm going to make the best of it. "You've got some young guys (defensemen) and you've got to play them or you lose them. I understand the situation. I love playing here.""
Tampa courts Sundin
"The Tampa Bay Lightning are believed to be the latest club interested in obtaining free agent Mats Sundin - if he decides to play again. While the NHL community awaits Sundin's decision, his agent, J.P. Barry, confirmed two more clubs have recently expressed interest in his client. Barry would not reveal the two new teams that have joined the Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, Vancouver Canucks, New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers in the pursuit of the veteran centre, but one is believed to be the Lightning. Sundin not only met with Leafs general manager Cliff Fletcher last Friday and Canadiens boss Bob Gainey on Saturday in Toronto, he also played in the Right to Play charity ..."
Wings' Hossa here to win -- but only for one year?
"Marian Hossa arrived at Joe Louis Arena on Monday morning for his first -- and quite possibly -- only season with the Red Wings. With the salary-cap rules and the Wings' obvious desire to sign Henrik Zetterberg to a new long-term deal, Hossa is likely to be one-and-done in Detroit. He has become the NHL's version of the hired gun. Pittsburgh acquired him at the trade deadline last season and he helped them reach the Stanley Cup Finals. Now he's moved on to the defending champions. "I look at it like I'm here for one year," Hossa said after an informal skate with some of his new teammates. "During the year, we'll see how the cap room is going to stay or move. Then we'll talk with the GM ..."
Report: Chelios Agrees To One-Year Deal With Wings
"It appears the Detroit Red Wings will retain the services of defencemen Chris Chelios and Kyle Quincey for next season. According to reports out of Detroit, Chelios has agreed to a one-year deal worth less than last year's $850,000 contract while Quincey is close to signing a two-year deal. Chelios is expected to sign his new deal next week. "We've basically agreed,'' Holland told MLive.com. "When he gets into town next week, we're going to sign it.'' Veteran winger Darren McCarty is also expected to return to the Red Wings, reportedly agreeing in principle to a two-way contract with the club. "The deadline is to get it done before camp,'' McCarty told MLive.com. "This is the only place I ..."
Chris Chelios intends on returning to Blackhawks some day
"Aren't they satisfied with poaching Scotty Bowman? Chris Chelios had his time with the Stanley Cup last week and took it to his hometown of Chicago. Of course, he was asked if he'd like to come back and finish his career there. "You don't want to hurt anyone's feelings," Chelios told the Chicago Tribune. "I found a new home in Detroit, but Chicago is always going to be home. My parents still live here, and I intend on coming back home here some day and spending the rest of my days here, whether it's as a player or somehow being involved with the Blackhawks." Can't fault a guy for that. Cheli added: "Hopefully I don't have to look ahead that far and just worry about playing now." Chelios, ..."
Red Wings near deal with defenseman Ericsson
"The Detroit Red Wings are close to signing defenseman Jonathan Ericsson to a three-year contract, according to Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet. The deal reportedly will pay $550,000 next season, $900,000 in 2009-10 and $1.25 million in 2010-11. The two-way contract would mean Ericsson would receive a lower salary and wouldn't count against the salary cap if he were assigned to the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League. Ericsson, who is 6-foot-5, 225 pounds, is regarded as the top prospect in the Red Wings' system."
Red Wings' game at Wrigley Field all but official
"Detroit Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said he hasn't been told officially that his team will play an outdoor game in Chicago next season. But he likes the idea. "We're interested, if we're a candidate," Holland said Monday. "An outdoor game, for whoever is involved, is a unique experience for players and the organization. There's a tremendous amount of focus on the game, and certainly we have interest." It is all but official that the Red Wings will play the Chicago Blackhawks on New Years Day at historic Wrigley Field, home of the Cubs, in the second Winter Classic and just the third outdoor game in NHL history. NHL Players Association executive director Paul Kelly ..."
Blackhawks-Red Wings Jan. 1 at Wrigley Field awaits league approval
"In what is fast becoming the worst-kept secret in hockey, an official announcement appears imminent that the Blackhawks will play host to the Detroit Red Wings at Wrigley Field on Jan. 1 in the second Winter Classic. A Hawks source told the Tribune in June the team was confident it would be awarded the outdoor game, and late Sunday the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported the matchup and venue were approved last week when NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman met with the Hawks, Cubs and Mayor Richard Daley."
Avery Could Land In Dallas Or Detroit
"Glen Sather wouldn't give Avery an extra $4M over four years - Page Six Sean is believed on his way to either Detroit or Dallas - but the GM instead lavished a six-year contract worth $6.5M per on 31-year-old Wade Redden, a reasonably dependable puck-moving defenseman who had a dreadful 2007-08 in Ottawa and has never been regarded as a game-changer over 11 seasons with the Senators."
