Rockets Trade Rumors

Bobcats Extend Offer Sheet to Carl Landry
"Charlotte Bobcats General Manager Rod Higgins announced today that the team has extended an offer sheet to restricted free agent Carl Landry. Per team policy, terms were not disclosed. In accordance with the NBA’s Collective Bargaining Agreement, Landry’s current team, the Houston Rockets, will have seven days to decide whether to match the offer. “Landry is an emerging NBA talent, as evidenced by his play over the final 42 regular-season games and into the Rockets first-round playoff appearance,” Higgins said. “His ability to play both the power forward and center position will complement our post play.” In his rookie season with Houston, Landry (6-9, 248 pounds) averaged 8.1 points and ..."
Novak bound for Clippers
"The Rockets expect to trim their roster and their bloated collection of forwards today by dealing Steve Novak to the Los Angeles Clippers, an individual with knowledge of the deal said Tuesday. The Rockets will receive future draft considerations from Los Angeles. This will likely include the right to switch places with the Clippers in a second round. It is unclear which season that would be because both teams have future second- round commitments. The Rockets selected Novak, 25, in the second round of the 2006 NBA draft. A 6-10 forward, he averaged 2.7 points in 70 NBA games, making 44.1 percent of his shots and 42.7 percent of his 3-pointers. The highlight of his two seasons with the ..."
Rockets' forward Landry may opt to play overseas
"The agent for restricted free agent forward Carl Landry says his client may entertain offers to play overseas. "Carl would entertain all serious offers," Landry's agent, Buddy Baker, told Houston television station KRIV-TV on Wednesday. "There is serious interest in Carl by both other NBA teams and internationally." Landry was a rookie for the Houston Rockets last season and averaged 8.1 points and 4.9 rebounds a game."
McGrady: Happy Rocket?
"At least it seems everybody can agree on this: Tracy McGrady is happy. Whether the Houston Rockets will trade him to, say, the Pistons, is another matter. ESPN's Stephen A. Smith stirred that pot Tuesday when he said McGrady wouldn't mind coming to Detroit and joining Team Dumars. Said Smith: "Is Tracy McGrady interested? Yes, he is. I spoke to Tracy McGrady earlier. His basic thing is he's very happy in Houston, but he wants to win. So whatever is a winning situation for him is something he is more than willing to entertain.""
Yao could be ready for Olympic warmup
"Chinese newspapers say Yao Ming is likely to resume working out with China's national basketball team later this week. The Houston Rockets' center has a "very high" chance of playing in China's three games at the Stankovic Cup Olympic warmup tournament in the eastern city of Hangzhou, Hu Jiashi, deputy director of the Chinese Basketball Association was quoted as saying by newspapers. China's first game is against Serbia on Thursday."
Pistons deny they're close to a deal for Tracy McGrady
"A team source indicated today that the Pistons are not “remotely” close to a deal for Houston Rockets superstar Tracy McGrady. Metronews.ca, which is based in Toronto, said in an Internet report — but cited no sources — that the Pistons are "making a big push for McGrady." The Pistons source downplayed the report, saying the Rockets are just one of many teams to whom the club has spoken about potential trades."
Celtics make offer to James Posey
"The Celtics opened the free agent season, as expected, by making an offer to James Posey yesterday. The NBA champions also had to get in line in order to keep Posey. Though agent Mark Bartlestein declined to name the other franchises that filed offers for the valuable swingman, the group is known to include a substantial list of playoff teams like the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Houston Rockets, the New Orleans Hornets and possibly the Detroit Pistons and the Los Angeles Lakers. It’s unclear how close the Celtics’ offer came to the mid-level, long-term deal that Posey wants, with the desired first year starting at approximately $5.8 million and extending over four or five seasons. The ..."
Agent says Landry has healthy knee
"With the Rockets seeking additional medical tests before extending a contract offer to restricted free agent Carl Landry, Landry's agent shot back that the request was designed to frighten off other suitors and said the tactic has backfired. Agent Buddy Baker said Tuesday that Landry has no health issues, and that Dr. James Andrews declared Landry's right knee to be sound. Rockets general manager Daryl Morey said Monday the team would need more detailed information than available with imaging tests before it could make an offer to Landry, though it still expected to keep Landry."
James Posey chooses free agency over C’s
"James Posey, after deciding not to exercise the option on the final year of his contract yesterday, is a free agent with what may be one of the largest markets of the summer. The fact that there is a limited pool of teams with significant salary cap space (Philadelphia 76ers, Memphis Grizzlies) does not bode well for the biggest names (unrestricted free agent Gilbert Arenas, restricted free agents Luol Deng and Andre Iguodala) this summer, but Posey’s lower-level aims are likely to draw a bigger crowd. The Celtics forward reportedly is looking for a midlevel deal that starts at approximately $5.8 million and carries over 4-5 years...Posey’s hometown Cleveland Cavaliers are said to be ..."
Rockets to pursue Spurs guard Barry in free agency
"The Rockets began the free-agent recruiting period with an 11 p.m. call to Spurs guard Brent Barry on Monday, Rockets general manager Daryl Morey said, but the team might already have hit a snag in its plan to bring back forward Carl Landry. The Rockets telephoned Barry as soon as NBA rules allowed in an effort to land the free agent, who got away last season when he was released by the Seattle SuperSonics but chose to return to the San Antonio Spurs."
Pacers will likely pass on big-name free agents
"The Indiana Pacers don't look like a team primed to be a major player in the free agent negotiating period that begins today. After deals with Portland and Toronto that will bring seven players to town, the Pacers appear to be looking to clear salary-cap space rather than add to the payroll. A possible free agent target for the Pacers is Carl Landry. The Houston Rockets extended a qualifying offer of $711,517 to the 6-9 forward and former Purdue standout, meaning they have the right to match any offer he receives."
Rockets bid to hold Landry with qualifying offer
"The Rockets extended a qualifying offer to restricted free-agent forward Carl Landry on Sunday. In his first season out of Purdue, the 6-9 Landry averaged 8.1 points and 4.9 rebounds in 42 games. According to the NBA's collective bargaining agreement, the qualifying offer establishes the Rockets' right of first refusal. Restricted free agents may sign an offer with any team, but the Rockets have the ability to match any offer to Landry."
Horry wanting to return, hopes it's with the Spurs
"Horry had told the Express-News that if he returned for a 17th season, he preferred that it be with the Spurs, but said there were "two or three" other teams for which he would consider playing. KRIV-TV reported that Horry said he would prefer to play in Houston if the Spurs opted not to sign him."
Pistons' most likely deals: Tracy McGrady, Carmelo Anthony, or ... nothing
"Normally, I am not a big fan of trade speculation. It tends to get ridiculous: How about Jiri Hudler and Jimmy Howard for Sidney Crosby? No? What if they throw in Evgeni Malkin? I'll tell you what: I'll give you my pickle for half your sandwich. No, I won't throw in the barbecue chips. OK, a few. It's silly. But when Joe Dumars announced that he would try to shake up his Pistons core, he practically begged people to speculate. And considering Dumars is unlikely to swing a deal before the draft June 26, or even the start of free agency July 1, this gives us a bunch of time to either a) work or b) dream up trade scenarios. (Or, in my case, both at once!) Let's look at this ..."
Trades? They're a comin'
"The calendar and the weather may suggest otherwise, but the NBA climate has the feel of February. Much like the frenzy and wild speculation that serve as a prelude to the league's trade deadline, caution must be observed and logic exercised. With so many teams looking to improve and so many names being bandied about, it wouldn't surprise any one if one or two roster-altering moves are completed, perhaps more. Until the NBA final runs its course, no deal will be announced in an environment where there's no shortage of possibilities, some that appear to have merit."
Kerr focuses on 4 coach candidates
"Detroit assistant coach and close friend Terry Porter is still believed to be Kerr's No. 1 choice. Kerr admitted that Porter's previous head coaching experience in Milwaukee "helps, for sure," and "I don't think anybody can know what it's like to be a head coach in the NBA until they actually have been one." But Kerr quickly pointed out that the other three candidates: San Antonio's Mike Budenholzer, Utah's Tyrone Corbin and Houston's Elston Turner all have significant experience as assistants. Kerr played for Budenholzer for four seasons in San Antonio and with Corbin in Phoenix."
Suns down to final candidates
"By the end of next week, the Suns are expecting to be able to fill in the blank: Phoenix head coach ___________. Speaking at length for the first time since the coaching search began May 12, Suns General Manager Steve Kerr said interviews are "probably completed." The finalists are believed to be Detroit Pistons assistant Terry Porter, Houston Rockets lead assistant Elston Turner and Utah Jazz assistant Tyrone Corbin, with insiders believing Kerr is leaning toward Porter."
Porter appears to be Suns' top candidate
"The Suns’ coaching search is winding to a close after Spurs assistant coach Mike Budenholzer had his formal interview with general manager Steve Kerr on Tuesday in Phoenix. The meeting wasn’t nearly as long as Detroit assistant Terry Porter’s second interview on Monday. Kerr was back home in San Diego in time to take in the Cubs-Padres game Tuesday night. He said he doesn’t have any more interviews scheduled and there are no “surprise” candidates beyond the known finalists — Budenholzer, Porter, Utah assistant Tyrone Corbin and Houston assistant Elston Turner."
Kerr favorite Porter may top list
"The Suns' head-coaching search is nearing a conclusion, with indications that it will end with a choice that General Manager Steve Kerr long has had in mind. Each NBA general manager keeps a list of coaches he would consider hiring should a vacancy arise. Two sources say that Detroit Pistons lead assistant coach Terry Porter has been at the top of Kerr's list for a while and that Porter's position strengthened with the addition of center Shaquille O'Neal in February. Although San Antonio Spurs lead assistant Mike Budenholzer interviewed Tuesday in Phoenix, the finalists are considered to be Porter, Houston Rockets lead assistant Elston Turner and Utah Jazz assistant Tyrone Corbin."
Porter could be leading Suns coaching candidate
"Los Angeles Lakers assistant Brian Shaw told the Orange County Register Monday that he’s been informed by Suns general manager Steve Kerr that he’s no longer a candidate for their head coaching position – and in the process pushed Terry Porter to the head of the class. In saying he was eliminated, Shaw went one step further than that, saying Kerr told him “He wanted to have a coach that had experience in terms of being a head coach.” If Shaw is correct, that would also eliminate Utah’s Tyrone Corbin and Houston’s Elston Turner from the Suns’ coaching derby as well as San Antonio assistant Mike Budenholzer – who arrives in Phoenix today for his first talk with the Suns. And it would leave ..."
Bzdelik on Bulls' list
"Chicago-area newspapers are reporting University of Colorado men's basketball coach Jeff Bzdelik is on a list of potential candidates for the Chicago Bulls' head coaching job and could be interviewed by Bulls general manager John Paxson this week at the NBA pre-draft camp in Orlando, Fla. According to the Chicago Sun-Times and the suburban-based Daily Herald, Bzdelik is among several candidates. The exhaustive list also includes recently fired Dallas Mavericks coach Avery Johnson, former Minnesota coach Dwane Casey, Utah Jazz assistant Tyrone Corbin, Houston assistant Elston Turner, former NBA head coach John Lucas and parttime Jazz assistant Jeff Hornacek."
Hornacek was 'player-coach'
"Jeff Hornacek grew up idolizing the Bulls while sta
