Sharks hire two bench assistants, two other aides

"The Sharks expanded their coaching staff Wednesday, giving Todd McLellan more assistants than his predecessor and making their first hire to work with goalies since the death of Warren Strelow 15 months ago.The two assistants on the bench alongside McLellan will be Trent Yawney, a longtime Chicago Blackhawk who coached that team for parts of two seasons, and Todd Richards, coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins' top development team in Wilkes-Barre, Pa."It was important to me that personalities matched," McLellan said, "that there was going to be some loyalty - not just to me, but to the Sharks family and each other."Yawney, who was a scout with Anaheim last season, will have responsibility for the defense and penalty kill. Richards, whose team advanced to the American Hockey League playoff finals, will be in charge of the power play and work with McLellan on forward lines and matchups.McLellan and Yawney were teammates in their teens, playing for the Saskatoon Blades of the Western Hockey League. Yawney also will be reunited with two former Chicago teammates - forward Jeremy Roenick and General Manager Doug Wilson. Yawney and Richards replace Tim Hunter and Rob Zettler, who followed Ron Wilson to Toronto. In addition, Jay Woodcroft, who worked with McLellan as Detroit's video coach the past three seasons, will work in a broader but similar role with the Sharks."
