The Patriots yesterday locked up second-round draft choice Terrence Wheatley, signing the cornerback out of Colorado just two days prior to the start of training camp. Wheatley’s agreement leaves linebacker Jerod Mayo, the team’s first-round pick (No. 10 overall) out of Tennessee, as the lone draft choice unsigned... Wheatley, 23, figures to be in the mix for ex-Patriot Randall Gay’s old role as a nickel corner. With his blazing speed, Wheatley also might earn a job as a kick returner, given his exploits while in college. He gained 1,350 yards on kickoff returns during his time with the Buffaloes.
