Receiver's stay here ends after 6 years

"There was a time, not long ago, when it was difficult to imagine the Chargers receiver corps without trusty Eric Parker. But his high salary, a toe injury that kept him out last season and might hamper him further, and the Chargers' abundance of receivers conspired to bring his six-year career in San Diego to a close yesterday. As expected, the Chargers released Parker. %u201CMy time spent in San Diego, it's been a good time,%u201D the 29-year-old receiver said yesterday. %u201CEveryone has been good to me. It was a great run for me.%u201D Sources said last month the team would release or trade Parker before training camp, and his agent has been working on securing a job for Parker. It is unclear where he will land, though several teams have expressed interest. The agent, Jack Bechta, said Parker's surgically repaired toe is %u201Cnot 100 percent%u201D and his client will not visit prospective teams until it is. Whoever eventually signs him will likely do so at a discount from the $1.85 million he was due to make this year. Parker was signed through 2010 on a deal he signed in 2006. Even though Parker missed the entire 2007 season, his 170 receptions since 2003 rank third on the team behind Antonio Gates and LaDainian Tomlinson. Teammates consistently ranked him as the team's hardest worker, and he played through numerous injuries after joining the Chargers in 2002. Parker, who finished his San Diego career with 187 catches and 11 touchdowns, was also the team's primary punt returner from 2004 through '06. %u201CHe was a terrific kid and great football player for us,%u201D General Manager A.J. Smith said. %u201CWe wish him the best.%u201D Parker had surgery on his right big toe in October. He ran and did other drills during the spring but did not participate in minicamp or offseason coaching sessions."
