It's the beginning of coach Ken Whisenhunt's second season with the Cardinals, so most of his players should be familiar with how things operate as training camp begins at Northern Arizona University.
Shouldn't they?
"They should make this road down here a two-way street," right tackle Levi Brown said after having a little difficulty navigating on NAU's campus. "A lot of guys are stuck over here somewhere."
Brown, a first-round draft pick in 2007, can be forgiven. This is only his second season with the Cardinals, and he missed the first six days of camp last year before he signed. So Flagstaff is fairly new to him.
Other than a few misguided drivers, the Cardinals arrived Wednesday for the start of training camp without incident. Receiver Anquan Boldin and defensive end Darnell Dockett reported as promised, even though they desire new contracts.
The only player missing was cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, the team's 2008 first-round draft pick who remains unsigned. Club officials remain optimistic that Rodgers-Cromartie's deal won't take long to complete once players drafted around him sign.
That effort should get a boost with the news Wednesday that the Chicago Bears had come to terms with offensive tackle Chris Williams, the 14th overall pick. His five-year contract reportedly is worth $16 million, with a little less than $10 million guaranteed.
Rodgers-Cromartie, the 16th overall pick, was ready this week to report to camp until someone informed that he couldn't until he was under contract.
Cardinals General Manager Rod Graves talked with Rodgers-Cromartie's agent, Eugene Parker, throughout Wednesday, and discussions were expected to continue into the evening.
"Although we still have a bit of ground to cover, we have made progress," Graves said."
