Phillies counting on a mature Moyer tonight

"On the surface, Saturday provided a different Jamie Moyer than the one that took to the podium a week ago in Milwaukee before Game 3 of the National League Division Series.Beneath the left-field stands of Dodger Stadium, with Game 3 of the National League Championship Series on tap tonight against Los Angeles, Moyer appeared more reserved. While it's impossible to say he's more focused after a four-inning effort last Saturday in a game the Phillies eventually lost 4-1, this was certainly a more introspective version of the Phillies No. 3 starter.

"Go back to the drawing board and prepare for the next outing," said Moyer, who will be making only the second championship series start of his 22 seasons in the big leagues. "Results are results, good or bad. I haven't dwelt on it. It's the playoffs. It's a fun time. It's exciting. It's a great opportunity.

"We won the last series, that's behind us. We've got off to a nice start here in this series and it will be nice to go out (today) and play together as a team and put together a nice game and see what happens."

Moyer will have his work cut out for him as the Phillies arrived in Los Angeles up 2-0 in this best-of-7 series against the Dodgers. The veteran has shown an innate ability to shake off poor starts since joining the Phillies in the summer of 2006, but this start has taken on added importance since the Phillies were swept in a four-game series earlier this year at Dodger Stadium with a potential three games in Chavez Ravine on the docket.

Moyer has defied the odds for the better part of 2 1/2 seasons with the Phillies, not because he has an electric arsenal of pitches but because he understands the complexities of pitching at this level. It's not often that someone equipped with an 83 mph fastball can win 16 games or make 33 starts, let alone one that is 45 years of age. But that's what Moyer has done this year and in all fairness, he -- along with Cole Hamels -- has been the most consistent pitcher for the Phillies since opening day.

The reality of this situation is the Phillies wouldn't want any other pitcher going tonight against a Dodgers lineup that has yet to find its legs in this series.

"To me, they're like a school of sharks," Moyer analogized.

"Kind of on the prowl. And if you can keep -- kind of keep them all separated in the pool, you know, it's a great way to go after them. But when they kind of swarm together and they see the blood in the water, I think they attack and they do a very good job of it. And I think it's very evident the way they played the last two months of the season.

"Then you throw Manny (Ramirez) into that mix, who is a professional hitter. He didn't just prove it here when he came here to LA. He did it in Boston. He did it in Cleveland. He makes people around him better. That's been written about a thousand times since he's been here and been in Boston and been in Cleveland."

Unlike Hamels and Brett Myers,"
