"For the first time this off-season, the Green Bay Packers and the agent for running back Ryan Grant have had substantive talks about a long-term contract.

Nevertheless, Grant is holding firm that he won't report to training camp if an agreement isn't reached.

Grant's agent, Alan Herman, said Wednesday that the two sides finally got down to business last Friday and have spoken almost every day since in an attempt to hammer out a contract. Herman didn't think the sides were all that far apart, but there were some fundamental differences keeping the deal from getting done.

"You would think that it would not be that difficult to get done," Herman said. "I think we're trying to do that. Overall, the majority of the money we're willing to put into performance-based pay. The better he does, the more money he makes. It's a no-brainer."
