Former Knick Houston again takes shot at comeback

"Allan Houston plans to make another attempt at a comeback this fall and it is possible he could get a second try with the Knicks. The 37-year-old Houston told Newsday Tuesday that his agent, Bill Strickland, has been in touch with a few teams and is in preliminary discussions about a training camp tryout. Talks aren't expected to heat up until after Labor Day.

"I don't know where it's going to be, but I'm looking forward to it," Houston said about the comeback attempt, which would be his second in as many years. "I think the biggest thing is I want to be somewhere where I can be a good fit."

The Knicks open training camp Sept. 30 in Saratoga Springs.

Strickland has yet to talk with the Knicks, but a person with knowledge of the Knicks' plans said president Donnie Walsh "would like to talk" to Houston about his comeback attempt. Houston tried to make a comeback last fall when he showed up midway through Knicks training camp, but barely lasted a week. Houston only saw six minutes of garbage time against the Boston Celtics in a preseason game and shortly after that put an end to his comeback. Former president and coach Isiah Thomas did not show a great deal of interest in Houston, who admitted that he wasn't quite as prepared as he should have been.

"At this point, I put myself in the best position to be ready before that, instead of trying to go in the middle of training camp," Houston said.

Houston, who is fourth on the Knicks' all-time scoring list, has the shooting ability - not to mention experience - that Walsh and Mike D'Antoni would love to add to the roster. The main concern, of course, is his ability to move at NBA speed. He retired Oct. 17, 2005 after chronic knee issues and had microfracture surgery to repair the problems and in the spring of 2007 began talking of plans for a comeback."
