Yankee first baseman Mark Teixeira is out of the World Baseball Classic after suffering a strained right forearm during batting practice Tuesday.
X-rays were negative, but Yankee manager Joe Girardi said, “I’m sure more tests are planned.” Girardi added that the injury is concerning. “Yeah, because he’s not here it’s a little more concerning because you’re wondering what it will be,” Girardi said.
Teixeira’s injury doubtless will expose the WBC to criticism, though who knows if Teixeira would’ve been hurt at Yankee camp, though Girardi said he didn’t believe Teixeira had hurt the arm during spring training.
A Team USA spokesman said Teixeira was slated to miss 7-10 days because of the injury, which Teixeira suffered while taking swings at balls on a tee. Team USA will replace him on the roster and potential candidates include Prince Fielder, Ryan Howard and Paul Konerko.
