The Yankees signed veteran first baseman Lyle Overbay to a minor league contract on Tuesday, hours after the 36-year-old was released by the Red Sox.

Overbay, who is expected to join the Yankees at spring training, was batting .220 (9-for-41) with five runs, three extra-base hits and seven RBIs in 19 spring training games as a non-roster invitee with the Red Sox. Last season, he hit .259 with two home runs and 10 RBIs in 65 games with the Diamondbacks and Braves.
