The Yankees have reportedly acquired Fernando Martinez, the former jewel of the Mets farm system, from Houston in exchange for shipping Charles Basford, a 22-year-old right-hander. Basford was pitching for Class-A Staten Island. The Houston Chronicle reported the deal on Tuesday night.

At 24, Martinez has fallen quite far of the aspirations the Mets had for him. Before the 2008 season, Baseball America rated Martinez the No. 20 prospect in the game. But his reputation degraded due to a chronic series of injuries. Houston claimed him off waivers on Jan. 11, 2012.

Martinez hit just. 219 for Triple-A Round Rock this season.
