A San Francisco Giants player who sparked a report of sexual assault Friday morning had been socializing with fans the night before at Motiv on Pacific Avenue in Santa Cruz, the bar manager confirmed Sunday.

About 4:30 a.m. Friday, the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office received a complaint that 25-year-old third baseman Pablo Sandoval had sexually assaulted a woman he met earlier in downtown Santa Cruz, according to a statement Saturday by Lt. Fred Plageman.

The woman met a small group of people and went with them to Seascape Beach Resort in Aptos, where the alleged assault occurred, Plageman said.

Sandoval, a San Francisco resident, cooperated with the investigation and was questioned but not arrested, Plageman said.

His attorney, Eric Geffon, said the sexual activity had been consensual. No details about the alleged assault or victim were released.
