Kyle Quincey, who took a shot deflected off the shaft of his stick to his face against the Oilers Friday, returned to Detroit ahead of the team.

"According to X-rays, it looks like it's a fractured cheekbone," general manager Ken Holland said.

Quincey might require surgery. The defenseman must see doctors in Detroit Monday before full determinations are made, including how much time he will miss.

Ian White, a frequent healthy scratch lately after pairing with Nicklas Lidstrom for much of last season, will play tonight against the Canucks.

It is another blow to the Red Wings, who have lost 166 man games to injury and illness this season.

"It sounds like he's going to need surgery," Coach Mike Babcock said. "Obviously, it ramped up his stick and hit him in the face.

"It's disappointing for him. Kyle was starting to skate better and be more effective for us. And, you know, it's just one of those things on the back end — keeps you entertained," Babcock said.
