Jimmy Howard's job description demands he be ready for anything, without so much as a moment's notice.

So it figures the Red Wings goaltender would begin fatherhood like this, scrambling to defend an odd-man rush.

"Everything happened so fast," Howard said Wednesday, smiling as he returned to his suddenly less stressful job less than 72 hours after the impromptu birth of his first child, James Russell Howard IV, on Sunday afternoon.

Howard and his wife, Rachel, went for a scheduled appointment at Providence Park Hospital in Novi on Sunday, after the Red Wings returned home from a 7-1 road loss to the Capitals the previous night.
