West Bromwich Albion are on the verge of agreeing a deal to sign Uruguay captain Diego Lugano from Paris Saint-Garmain according to the Birmingham Mail.

The 32-year-old defender is set to become Steve Clarke’s second summer signing once he has completed the final stages of the negotiations.

Lugano was at the Hawthorns yesterday for a medical and an announcement on his arrival is expected by the end of the week.

The Midlands club could secure his signature for as little as £1m after the defender’s contract was due to expire next summer was told he is surplus to requirements at PSG.

He fell out of favour with the French champions after spending last season on-loan at Spanish outfit Malaga.
