Picking Ryan Vogelsong to start Game 3 over two-time Cy Young Award winner and 2010 postseason hero Tim Lincecum sounded like a tough choice for manager Bruce Bochy. In reality, the pitchers made the decision for Bochy.

Vogelsong finished the regular season with three solid starts and had incredible life on his pitches in the final one in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

Lincecum ended with two bad games and surrendered three homers at Petco Park in his finale eight days ago. His season ERA was the worst among the 47 National League pitchers who had enough innings to qualify for the title.

"It's about doing what's right," Bochy said after announcing the choice Sunday. "The way Vogy is throwing right now, he deserves to go Tuesday."

Bochy informed Lincecum that he would pitch out of the bullpen for Game 2 (he would enter in the sixth and work two innings). Bochy said Lincecum responded, "Sure, I'd like to start. I understand. I'm going to do what I can to help this club go further."
