Vladimir Guerrero has signed a one-year contract with the Long Island Ducks, an independent minor league team, said agent Greg Maroni of California Sports Management. Guerrero signed with Maroni in January.

Guerrero’s new team plays in the independent Atlantic League and was, in fact, the league champion last season.

A career .318 hitter, the slugger is hoping this will be a springboard.

“My ultimate goal is to make it back to the major leagues and attempt to reach 500 home runs as soon as possible," Guerrero said in a statement. "I own a home on Long Island and am also very comfortable there. I am very grateful and excited for the opportunity Long Island Ducks GM Michael Pfaff has given me and I can’t wait to help them win."

He last played a major league game for the Baltimore Orioles in 2011. He had a minor league deal with the Toronto Blue Jays' organization last season but was given his unconditional release.
