Tyler Lyons will be the second lefthanded rookie to join the Cardinals’ rotation this month when he starts tonight's game against the Padres.

But he said he is not like John Gast, who won his first two starts.

“I would say Gast and I are not very similar pitchers, for sure,” said Lyons. “He’s got a really, really good changeup and I pitch more off my breaking balls than he does.”

Oklahoma State product Lyons has never thrown in a game to catcher Yadier Molina, who was in the World Baseball Classic with the Puerto Rican team when Lyons was pitching in exhibition games this spring.

But Lyons, 25, said he will follow Molina’s lead in pitch selection. Entirely.

“The easiest way is to let him make those decisions and when I see it, do my best to execute the pitch,” said Lyons.
