Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas has admitted that the club did enquire about the services of Chelsea playmaker Juan Mata.

However the former Blues manager has insisted that the club were never close to signing the player.

Mata has been given a bit-part role in Jose Mourinho's side so far this campaign and was linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge in the last transfer window.

When discussing Spurs' past interest in the Spanish star Villas-Boas told reporters: "When top players become available when their situation changes at a club and particularly for a player like Juan Mata you enquire about the situation but nothing went further than a simple enquiry."

Villas-Boas will go head-to-head with his old club tomorrow as he will look to get one over his old boss Jose Mourinho.
