In an attempt to get him two plate appearances from the right side of the plate -- the side his balky elbow will allow him to swing comfortably -- the Cardinals will start Rafael Furcal today at designated hitter and leadoff for their game against Boston.

The Red Sox, journeying from the other side of the state, have a lefthanded pitcher scheduled to start.

Furcal received an anti-inflammatory injection into his right elbow on Friday, and he is limited what he can do in the field as a result. Furcal has also been asked not to hit from the left side of the plate, where his follow-through would irritate his right elbow. Manager Mike Matheny wanted to get him some at-bats someway, and a lefty starter gives the chance at a couple at-bats before Jon Lester completes his appearance.
