The wait for Colin McCarthy to get back into the fight for the Titans’ middle linebacker job will continue at least another week.

The third-year pro who sat out Thursday’s preseason opener against the Redskins because of a hamstring injury will miss the Aug. 17 game against the Bengals as well coach Mike Munchak said on Friday.

Moise Fokou started in the middle against the Redskins and played well Munchak said but McCarthy remains very much a contender to win the job.

“When you know a player well I think he is going to be in the mix no matter what we do no matter when he is ready” Munchak said. “It’s just a matter of when Colin is back in there and how he is feeling.”

Right tackle David Stewart (leg soreness) and kicker Rob Bironas (back) are expected to return after missing Thursday’s game. Center Brian Schwenke (hamstring) is expected to return to practice this week and might play. Linebacker Zaviar Gooden (ankle) is out.

As for injuries suffered against the Redskins return man Marc Mariani (shoulder) linebacker Greg Jones (ankle) safety Markelle Martin (hamstring) and tackle Mike Otto (soreness) are all being evaluated but Munchak said he didn’t expect any of the four to miss significant practice time.

Wide receiver Kevin Walter tight end Delanie Walker and safety Robert Johnson remain on the physically unable to perform list and will not play against the Bengals.
