How do you replace a .330 hitter such as Victor Martinez?

The answer is you don't. Not easily, anyway.

But as of Tuesday, when it became known that Martinez might have to sit out the entire 2012 season, the pace of phone calls picked up to Tigers' president and general manager Dave Dombrowski.

There still are available free agents with power, such as Carlos Pena.

There are available free agents, such as Vladimir Guerrero, who've hit .300 several times in the past.

There's even Johnny Damon, who no doubt wouldn't mind being a Tiger again.

But they aren't Victor Martinez.
