Finally some definitive news about Miguel Cabrera.

Good news in fact.

After echoing manager Jim Leyland for three days in Chicago by saying only that Cabrera wasn’t ready to play trainer Kevin Rand provided his first extensive update about the Tigers third baseman Friday.

“He’s made real good improvement” Rand said. “Obviously we held him out of the lineup today to get him a chance to do some activity. He’s feeling a lot better but he still feels he needs another day or so.

“You’d rather lose Miguel Cabrera for two or three games in a row than two or three weeks. It’s important for us to make sure he’s right before we put him back out there.”

Torii Hunter also didn’t start against the Phillies.

Initially in the lineup Hunter tested his sore left Achilles during pregame work and decided it wouldn’t be wise to play.

“I just have to play smart until it’s over with” he said. “I’ve been playing so long I know all the injuries. I know this one won’t hold me back.”

Hunter said the only reason “I can come up with” for the soreness is a new pair of dress shoes he wore Thursday.

“I don’t remember an incident in the game” he said. “Maybe there was one but I don’t remember doing anything.
