Five-year-old Chase Kenny took two steps toward Miguel Cabrera and stopped.

Chase, wearing a Cabrera jersey, looked scared and apprehensive, walking up to his hero.

Cabrera sat behind a table Saturday afternoon outside DC Sports at Lakeside Mall in Sterling Heights.

Cabrera smiled and nodded and tilted his head, welcoming the shy boy to move closer. Even without speaking much English, Cabrera has a way of connecting with Detroit fans.

Especially kids.

Cabrera signed his autograph on a canvas poster, posed for a picture with Chase and then gave Chase a high five.
