Thiago Alcantara is expected to snub Manchester United and join Bayern Munich after Pep Guardiola confirmed his interest in the Barcelona midfielder.

The Premier League champions have been chasing the 22-year-old all summer long and were confident of striking a deal before the close of the transfer window.

Reports claimed United had agreed terms with the Italy-born midfielder but it now appears he has his heart set on a reunion with former Barcelona manager Guardiola in Munich.

Guardiola, who handed Thiago his senior debut at the Nou Camp, wants to pair him with fellow Spain international Javi Martinez at the heart of Bayern's midfield and has given him assurances he will play a major role next term.

"Yes," Guardiola told reporters, when asked if he was interested in Thiago. "I don't know what's going to happen. We have to wait. But I know him very well. He is a super, super player. He can play in three, four or five positions."

The European champions are willing to offer the youngster, who has also spurned Real Madrid's advances, £3.5m a season to play at the Allianz Arena.
