LHP Joe Ortiz added to the case that he should jump from the Double-A Texas League to the majors with another scoreless outing in the loss to San Diego.

Ortiz, 22, retired the side in order in the ninth on only 13 pitches. Ortiz’s ability to throw strikes appeals to the Rangers. In his last three appearances, Ortiz has thrown 33 strikes in 43 pitches.

LHP Robbie Ross followed the same path to make the same climb last spring.

“He’s not afraid,” manager Ron Washington said of Ortiz.

In Washington speak, that is the highest of praise. He likes aggressive pitchers. Ortiz has fit that description all spring.
