If Mike Munchak goes down, he’ll do so surrounded by people he knows and trusts.

That is at the heart of Munchak’s makeover of the Titans coaching staff. He’s doing it his way. With his job hanging in the balance, he’s employing a staff that suits him and meshes with his philosophy.

“The urgency is that we can’t take a step back. We can’t afford to have it in any phase — offense, defense and special teams,” Munchak said.

Time will tell if he’s made the right moves. Giving Dowell Loggains the keys to the offense is a risk. Bringing in Gregg Williams is potentially a flammable situation on defense. But at least Munchak didn’t stand pat and bank on incremental improvement. He’s going with his gut in a season that will define his head-coaching career.

The hiring of Williams is a radical departure from business as usual for Munchak. It is a gamble, both in the court of public opinion and where it relates to the overall coaching staff.
