The Tampa Rays officially announced Tuesday afternoon the signings of free agent relief pitcher Kyle Farnsworth and former Toronto Blue Jays second baseman Kelly Johnson.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Rays designated infielders Reid Brignac and Elliot Johnson for assignment.

Kelly Johnson, whose signing moves Ben Zobrist to the outfield, will make $2.45 million this season, plus incentives. Farnsworth will make $1.25 million plus incentives.

Brignac and Elliot Johnson became expandable after the Rays kept infielder Ryan Roberts, acquired last season in a trade with Arizona, and signed Kelly Johnson.

Farnsworth, who turns 37 in April, had arm issues during his first two seasons with the Rays, including a right elbow strain suffered near the end of last March that forced him to begin the 2012 season on the disabled list and kept him out of the first 77 games of the season. He also missed two weeks in September of 2011 with tenderness in his right elbow and was questionable for the postseason.
