White Sox pitching coach Don Cooper underwent surgery for diverticulitis Wednesday and is recovering in a Nashville hospital.

Cooper said via phone Thursday that he is starting to feel better and expects to be out of the hospital within a few days. He said he will have to take it easy for the first month or so and joked that he is “not going to be out lifting weights” for a while.

“It’s OK. It’s one of those things in life” Cooper said. “It’s not a matter of if something is going to happen. It’s a matter of when.

" ... I’m optimistic. I had no qualms about coming in.”
