The Stars have hired Lindy Ruff as their new head coach and will introduce him at a press conference at noon at American Airlines Center Friday, according to a source close to the situation.

Ruff, 53, is the former coach of the Buffalo Sabres. He served in that capacity for 15 seasons and has a 571-432-162 record. He was fired in February after the Sabres got off to a 6-10-1 start in the shortened lockout season.

Ruff is best known to Stars fans as the coach on the other bench in the 1999 Stanley Cup Finals. He protested that Brett Hull’s series-winning goal in triple overtime in Game 6 shouldn’t have counted because Hull had his skate in the crease. He wasn’t alone, as the phrase “No Goal” has become a part of Sabres culture.
