The Reds got the top-of-the-rotation starter they wanted, acquiring right-hander Mat Latos from the Padres on Saturday.

In return, the Padres received right-handed pitchers Edinson Volquez and Brad Boxberger, infielder Yonder Alonso and catcher Yasmani Grandal.

Latos, 24, will join right-hander Johnny Cueto, 25, to give the Reds a young, dynamic 1-2 starting punch. The Reds will control Latos for four years; he is not eligible for arbitration until 2013.

Latos was 9-14 with a 3.47 ERA for the Padres last season after going 14-10 with a 2.92 ERA in 2010.
