Billy Hamilton has gotten early passing grades in the center field. Hamilton, the Reds’ No. 1 prospect, is transitioning from shortstop to center field. Hamilton handled three chance yesterday in the howling winds in the game with Cleveland.

“He’s looked good,” Dusty Baker said. “Unless they mess up, they’re doing good. The objective is to catch the ball. I’m pleasantly surprised at the routes he’s taken in the short period of the time I’ve seen him.

“But he’s been working hard with (Billy Hatcher), Eric Davis and Darren Bragg. It helps to be around good outfielders.”

Someone mentioned that Hamilton is quiet.

“He ain’t quiet,” Baker said. “He’s quiet to you. Wait till you get to know him.”
