Almost a year to the day after he fractured his right hamate bone, an injury that required surgery and six weeks on the disabled list, Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval has fractured his left hamate bone, The Chronicle has confirmed. He injured the hand swinging the bat in Wednesday night's 3-2 loss to the Marlins.
We will get an opportunity to talk to the trainers and manager Bruce Bochy to get an official prognosis, but clearly this is another major, traumatic blow for a team that already has lost closer Brian Wilson for the season.
The hamate is a small, hook-like bone at the base of the hand, near the wrist. Surgery is usually the prescribed treatment option.
