Farewell to Rob Ryan; we barely knew you. The almost defensive coordinator of the Rams pulled out of the job just when his hiring was about to become official.

At the end of the day, Ryan had misgivings about coaching a 4-3 scheme without any defensive assistants of his hiring on the Rams' staff.

"He wanted it to work, and I just think he realized over the weekend that it was not (a fit)," said a source familiar with Ryan, speaking on the condition of anonymity. "Rob was torn."

Ryan arrived in town Friday, with expectations that his deal would be finalized sometime over the weekend. In fact, as early as Friday the Rams were prepared to officially announce his hiring. But nothing happened.

Ryan attended the Blues' hockey game Saturday, and his wife came into town that day as well. After the weekend passed, there were expectations that Ryan's hiring would be announced early in the week. Instead there was Tuesday's brief – and surprising – announcement by the Rams that "after extensive discussions involving defensive philosophy, the Rams and Rob Ryan agreed that he was not the right fit for the defensive coordinator position."
