Pablo Sandoval's arrival at Scottsdale Stadium didn't carry as much weight as it did a year ago, when the Giants third baseman's waistline was one of the subjects of the spring.

But with Sandoval, the number on the scale will always be scrutinized just as much as the numbers on the back of his baseball card. The man who most closely keeps an eye on those numbers, manager Bruce Bochy, was happy with what he saw Tuesday.

"I thought he looked good," Bochy said. "We've still got two or three days here before we crank up (the position players), but he's here early and getting some work in. That's always a good sign."

It was a far cry from 2010, when his weight ballooned and his production fizzled.

"You have up and down years," Sandoval said. "(But) for me, last year was a lesson. Now I know what I can do. Now I know what I have to do."
