Cubs pitchers Jeff Samardzija and James Russell agreed to one-year contracts Friday, thus avoiding arbitration.
Samardzija will receive $2.64 million with $125,000 in performance bonuses, while Russell will earn $1.075 million.
A source said Samardzija turned down a five-year deal. Samardzija only admitted to talking about a multi-year deal.
"We have three years to figure out what we want to do," he said.
Samardzija won't be eligible for free agency until after the 2015 season.
