The Rockies' need for another starting pitcher is reflected in their trade talks with Tampa Bay.

They have discussed right-hander Jeff Niemann, a major-league source confirmed Saturday. Tampa Bay has some interest in Rockies left-hander Christian Friedrich, but he has not pitched this spring because of back and neck stiffness. The talks began before spring training.

Nothing is imminent, because Friedrich might not throw off a mound until next week. It's also unclear whether the Rockies would trade Friedrich in a straight swap. The former first-round pick showed flashes of potential last season, especially on the road, where a nasty curveball helped him go 3-3 with a 3.78 ERA.
