With a week until the start of free agency, the Cardinals are trying to re-sign a handful of their players, including two important defensive parts.

Retaining inside linebacker Karlos Dansby is a priority, but it might be difficult to pull off this week.

On Saturday, Dansby and other unrestricted free agents can officially begin to talk to other teams. That rule is widely ignored and many conversations, preliminary and otherwise, took place last week at the scouting combine.

Free agents can sign beginning on March 11.

The Cardinals also are believed to be in negotiations with a handful of their 15 unrestricted free agents, including outside linebacker Matt Shaughnessy, who started 12 games in 2013.

“They are actively trying to re-sign him,” said Shaughnessy’s agent, Rich Rosa. “He wants to be there, so we’ll see how it goes.”
