Once right-hander Armando Galarraga got over the abject disappointment of having a perfect game taken away from him by a bad umpire’s call, he felt pretty good about himself.
The situation: A Detroit Tigers starter, Galarraga was one out away from pitching a perfect game against Cleveland on June 2, 2010. Now-Red Jason Donald hit a ground ball to first baseman Miguel Cabrera, who flipped the ball to Galarraga covering first.
Donald was clearly out.
Umpire Jim Joyce, however, infamously got the call wrong. Galarraga handled it about as well as anyone could. He and Joyce would eventually collaborate on a book called “Nobody’s Perfect.”
