Red Wings forward Johan Franzen was among a group of about two dozen players on the ice at Joe Louis Arena Thursday during an informal skate to prepare for next month's training camp in Traverse City.

Franzen 33 is excited about the upcoming season with a lot of new things on the Wings’ plate including a move to the Eastern Conference and their Winter Classic game against Toronto at Michigan Stadium on New Year's Day.

Franzen is happy to be reunited with his former Swedish national team teammate Daniel Alfredsson but also sad to see Valtteri Filppula leave the Red Wings for Tampa Bay.

"I've played with Alfie on the national team a lot” Franzen said. “I like him. He's a great guy big competitor and has a huge shot for the power play so it's a good addition.

"(Filppula) has been a great player for us for a long time and he'll be tough to replace but he wants to try his wings somewhere else and I wish him the best of luck. We'll try to do the best with what we have here."

The Red Wings will look for more production from Franzen who had 14 goals and 31 points during 41 games in the shortened regular-season then had four goals six points and a minus-7 rating during 14 postseason games. He had 28 goals and 55 points in 76 regular-season games in 2010-11 and 29 goals and 56 points in 77 games the following season.
