Clay Buchholz finally threw his bullpen session between games of the rain-delayed day-night doubleheader.

Alas, he went on the disabled list anyway.

As tonight's game was beginning, the Red Sox announced Buchholz has been placed on the 15-day disabled list and catcher Ryan Lavarnway has been called up from Triple-A Pawtucket. The move was made retroactive to June 9, meaning Buchholz won't make his scheduled start Saturday in Detroit but also may be activated from the disabled list as soon as June 24. Top pitching prospect Allen Webster now appears to be the leading candidate to start Saturday against the Tigers.

The Red Sox made another move, placing catcher David Ross on the seven-day concussion disabled list and recalling reliever Alex Wilson from Pawtucket.
