Already seeking to settle the roles in their in-flux bullpen, the Red Sox were dealt a big blow today when lefty Andrew Miller learned he will need season-ending surgery to repair ligament damage in his left foot.

Miller had a 2.64 ERA in 37 appearances for the Red Sox and had emerged as one of manager John Farrell's most trusted late-inning relievers.

For now, Farrell said the Red Sox will continue to explore in-house bullpen solutions, although he said they have not yet made any plans to move lefty Drake Britton to the bullpen at Triple-A Pawtucket. Additionally, Miller's injury may increase GM Ben Cherington's need to make a trade before the July 31 deadline.
