Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Brandon Gomes was optioned this morning to Triple-A Durham, a move that means pitcher Jamey Wright will make the Opening Day roster.

Gomes had one option left, while Wright was in camp on a minor-league contract. The Rays could assign Wright, a 17-year veteran, to Durham and pay him a $100,000 retention fee. Wright could also refuse the assignment.

The Rays had until noon today to make the decision on Wright, so nothing is official.

“I knew it was a possibility,” Gomes said. “I’m not happy about it, but that’s how it goes. Now it’s on me to keep doing what I’ve been doing and come up and help the team whenever need be.”
