Texas Rangers RHP Yu Darvish will be placed on the disabled list Thursday, retroactive to Sunday, with fatigue of the trapezius muscle in his upper back. The Rangers anticipate Darvish will be ready to be activated the first day he is eligible, which is July 22. It means he will essentially only miss one start.
“I think it’s a move of prudence,” Rangers assistant GM Thad Levine said Wednesday. “It’s a chance to get him some rest, have him miss only one start, catch his breath and be ready to hit the ground running in the second half.”
Darvish will return to Texas on Thursday to be further evaluated, but the Rangers do not anticipate anything surprising or significant. He is still planning to attend the All-Star game, as is his right, but will not participate.
“I don’t think this is a big issue,” Darvish said in a statement released by the Rangers. “It’s just a precaution, but I’d rather miss one start than push through it.”
