QPR have pulled out of the race to sign former West Ham target Duvan Zapata with Napoli in pole position to secure the Colombian.

The R's had agreed a £6.4m deal with Argentine club Estudiantes and were hoping to wrap up the transfer of the 22-year-old by this weekend.

However manager Harry Redknapp revealed today that the deal is now off as he steps up his pursuit of Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe.

"He is a player we talked about and feel has a big future" Redknapp told a regional evening newspaper.

"He could be a big star but we’re looking at this year and a player who can come do a job and get us out of this league.

"He is one we’d look at in a year or two."

Estudiantes' president Enrique Lombardi president revealed yesterday that he has held discussions with Napoli and Juventus over a deal for Zapata.

New Napoli boss Rafa Benitez identified Zapata as the man he wants to partner former Real Madrid forward Gonzalo Higuain with.
