Daniel Herrera, a reliever in the Mets’ system, arrived at spring training last season with shoulder-length black hair and a healthy left arm.

This time around he has neither.

Herrera underwent Tommy John surgery last May 1 after making just three appearances for Class AAA Buffalo. During his time away, he grew his hair longer. And longer. And longer.

"I was at home all year and didn’t have a real good reason to cut it," Herrera said. "I wasn’t in the organization playing, so it was just a good time to grow it."

He recently buzzed his head for Locks of Love, a charity that donates hair to children under 21 who lost theirs while battling serious medical issues.

As for his own medical issue, Herrera said he will step on the mound next week for the first time since surgery.

"I’m really excited," Herrera said. "It’s been a long way to get to this point. And my arm’s getting a lot stronger and doing a lot better."
